Real Madrid 4-2 Levante

Los Blancos run riot in the second half as the away side struggle after going down to 10 men, and the clinical Portuguese proved pivotal in deciding the thrilling contest.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s hat-trick has edged Real Madrid closer to the Primera Division title after his heroics helped the league leaders to a 4-2 victory over Levante, and opened up a 10-point gap over Barcelona at the top.

After weathering the Madrid storm with 11 men in the first half, Levante failed to do the same with 10 in the second half, as Ronaldo completed his hat-trick and Karim Benzema scored a fine effort, leaving Jose Mourinho’s side in a dominant position at the summit of La Liga.

Despite Madrid starting brighter than their opponents, it was the away side that surprisingly opened the scoring as Gustavo Cabral poked home from close range after Sergio Ramos had inadvertently flicked Francisco Farinos’ free kick into his path.

Mourinho’s men found their stride after going a goal behind, and began to pepper Gustavo Munua’s goal with efforts. Eventually, their perseverance paid off minutes before half time through a Ronaldo penalty as Iborra was given a second yellow card for handball inside the Levante box.

Madrid came racing out of the blocks in the second half, with Ronaldo scoring his second and third goals of the evening within 15 minutes of the restart.

Higuain did superbly to set up the Portuguese’s second goal, beating his man down the right before lifting a fantastic cross into the penalty area, that Ronaldo headed firmly past Munua to give his side a deserved lead.

The goal that completed his hat-trick, however, was the pick of the lot. He picked the ball up 35 yards from goal, carried it 10 yards, before unleashing an unstoppable dipping effort with his right foot that found the top right hand corner of Munua’s net.

That strike, while also Ronaldo’s 13th hat-trick in the white of Madrid, also had historical significance – it was the club’s 4000th La Liga goal inside the Santiago Bernabeu since its opening in December 1947.

Levante had a part to play in the contest too, however, and scored a surprise second to make it 3-2 when Arouna Kone rose highest above Sergio Ramos and Pepe to plant a header past Iker Casillas, after an enticing ball from the left by Oscar Serrano.

Just as the game seemed to settle down, Benzema got in on the act for the home side to effectively end the match as a contest.

Ronaldo collected possession on the edge of the Levante area, before rolling to the left to Benzema, who shifted his body from left to right before wrapping his foot round the ball and sending a fine effort into the far corner of the net.

Madrid went in search of a fifth as the game wore on, but were met by some resolute defending by Levante. However, they had did enough to ensure that the points remained in the capital, despite the best efforts of the visitors.

The win takes Los Merengues 10 points clear of second-placed Barcelona in La Liga and puts them firmly in control of the title race. Levante, meanwhile, remain in fourth place, despite not having won in the league since December 10.

Real Madrid vs Levante

Real Madrid will be out to avenge an embarrassing defeat to Juan Ignacio Martinez’s side earlier this season when they walk out at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday.

Los Merengues boss Jose Mourinho has been handed a boost ahead of Sunday’s Primera Division clash with Levante, with key duo Sami Khedira and Angel Di Maria returning to full fitness.

Germany international Khedira has been missing from action since early January with an ankle injury, while Di Maria has been nursing a thigh problem and is yet to feature in 2012. Both players are expected to be named on the bench.

The game is likely to come too soon for left-back Marcelo, who has been struggling with a thigh problem, while Hamit Altintop (calf) is also out.

Levante duo Jose Javier Barkero and Asier del Horno could recover from injury in time to make the trip to the capital.

Defender Juanfran is struggling with a foot complaint and is unlikely to feature, while Xavi Torres is suspended.

Sporting Gijon 0-3 Real Madrid

Goals from Angel Di Maria, Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcelo were enough for Real Madrid to secure a 3-0 victory over Sporting Gijon in an ill-tempered La Liga game at El Molinon on Saturday evening.

The away side dominated the early stages of the game, with Lassana Diarra and Sami Khedira bossing proceedings from the centre of Madrid’s midfield, much to the vocal home support’s disdain.

Despite their early pressure, neither side created any chances of note in the opening quarter of an hour, although Ronaldo did begin to stamp his influence on the game, giving the Sporting wing-back Roberto Canella a fairly torrid time in the opening exchanges.

In fact it was Ronaldo who fashioned the first real chance of the game, finding space on the edge of the box but then shooting high and wide with his left foot.

Di Maria was then unfortunate to see his thunderous effort parried away by Juan Pablo after Marcelo had done well to pick out the Argentine on the edge of the Sporting box.

Marcelo was finding all sorts of joy getting forward from left-back as the half wore on with Sporting resorting to illegal means to stop the Brazilian at times.

The Uruguayan Sebastien Eguren was the first to find his way into the referee’s book, after scything down the left-back after 25 minutes, with Oscar Trejo and David Barral following him into Eduardo Iturralde Gonzalez?’s book shortly afterwards.

Despite Gonzalo Higuain having a goal chalked off for offside Madrid did not have long to wait for their opening goal, just minutes later Di Maria robbed Damien Suarez of possession down the left before cutting inside and firing a cute finish past Juan Pablo from a tight angle.

Sporting perhaps should have equalised on the hour mark when Botia headed wastefully wide after Miguel de las Cuevas whipped an inviting free-kick to the back-post.

De las Cuevas then did well again to jink his way into the Madrid box, with the ball falling to David Barral just wide of the goal, but his tame effort was easily saved by Iker Casillas.

Ronaldo made it 2-0 to the visitors with 65 minutes gone, after he and Di Maria exchanged passes on the edge of the box. The Argentine winger then slid a perfectly weighted ball through to his Portuguese team-mate, who drifted past Juan Pablo before firing enthusiastically into an empty net.

A terrific save from Juan Pablo then denied Higuain from making it 3-0, after the forward had been played in by the in-form Ronaldo.

Sporting’s Sebastian Eguren was given his marching orders 10 minutes from the end, after receiving his second booking of the game.

Madrid did eventually add a third in injury time through Marcelo, after the Brazilian burst through on goal and fired a confident finish past Juan Pablo.

This victory cements Madrid’s position in first place of La Liga regardless of Barcelona’s result later on this evening, while Sporting remain in the relegation zone with just 12 points from 14 games. (

Real Madrid 4-1 Atletico Madrid

The Spanish capital is painted white after goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, Angel Di Maria and Gonzalo Higuain earned Real Madrid a 4-1 victory over Atletico Madrid on Saturday at the Santiago Bernabeu.

After the visitors controlled the early stages of the contest, the home side managed to respond to secure the three points to ensure they remain top of the table after 13 rounds.

The rivalry got off to a cracking start just 15 minutes in and it was the visitors who took the lead when Adrian Lopez worked a quick combination on the right side before being sent into the box by Diego, where the young Spaniard punished Iker Casillas with a simply finish at the front post, bagging his fifth league goal of the season.

The home fans were silenced, but it would only be temporary as Los Blancos responded just six minutes later. Di Maria filtered a soft pass into the box, ultimately finding Karim Benzema, and the former Lyon man took a touch past Thibaut Courtois, who brought him down with his outstretched arms as a penalty kick was awarded in addition to a red card brandished to the on-loan shot-stopper.

Sergio Asenjo came on to replace Thibault as Diego was sacrificed. Ronaldo took the spotkick for Madrid, faking out the goalkeeper before finishing inside the left post to level proceedings.

There were no further goals in the first half but just three minutes into the second, Di Maria put Jose Mourinho’s side in front. Ronaldo darted down the left side into the box to draw out Asenjo, before sending in a low ball that found the quick Argentine alone in the middle of the area and he finished well into the top of the net with an open goal.

In complete control, the home side extended their advantage in the 65th minute after Higuain chased down a ball that Diego Godin failed to clear as he strode into the box before making a move past the goalkeeper and finishing into the open net.

It went from bad to worse for Atleti with 10 minutes to go as they were reduced to nine men. Diego Godin was given his marching orders when he brought down Higuain inside the box which resulted in another penalty kick. Ronaldo stepped up again and sent his shot into the same side of the goal to wrap up the 4-1 win.

With the numerical advantage, the home side had a few more chances as the game reached its end and were able to control the Atletico attack to ensure the points to Jose Mourinho’s team.

With the victory, Real Madrid now have 34 points and remain in first place in La Liga, while Atletico Madrid sit mid-table with 16.(
